Applications for New Volunteers to this year’s Woodford Folk Festival open soon
Applications for those hoping to volunteer for the first time at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival will open online at midday this Sunday October 1, 2017.
Each year, more than 2,600 volunteers help transform the 500-acre festival site at Woodfordia, one hour’s drive north of Brisbane, into a fully functioning pop-up town the size of a regional centre like Lismore or Nambour.
New Volunteers account for one third of all volunteers, joining a contingent of Returning Volunteers who are given a one-month priority period to apply before applications open for New Volunteers.
There are over 300 different types of volunteer roles from customer service to working with bamboo, greeting patrons at the gates or pouring drinks behind the bars. About 20% of positions are dedicated to behind-the-scenes operations and ensuring our performers are well taken care of.
Some positions require special skills or tickets e.g.: costume and prop makers; lighting designers; electricians and plumbers. Those with a carpentry trade under their belt are needed to help us build facades, sets and the unique installations you find around the site. And if you have an EWP ticket, we’ll certainly hold you in high esteem.
We welcome safe drivers over the age of 25 to be part of the logistics crew who are responsible for tasks from picking up artists at the airport to delivering essentials to amenities blocks and everything in between.
All volunteers make a significant contribution to the building, operation and spirit of the Woodford Folk Festival and as part of the crew you’ll have a chance to make lifelong memories and friendships while being part of creating and contributing to a community celebration.
Volunteers Manager Karen McBride says all roles are best suited to those who share a common trait.
“Ideally, prospective volunteers will have a sense of humour and a pathological optimism,” she says.
“Whilst we do everything to prepare, the festival is a complex beast and things don’t always go to plan.
“We’re looking for people who can carry on with a smile and have fun while making the festival happen.”
There are no average days at the Woodford Folk Festival, having said that as a festival-period volunteer you can expect to donate approximately 5-6 hours of your time each day in exchange for a full festival ticket with crew camping, leaving you with plenty of time to engage with the programme.
Volunteering during The Build is a longer commitment, roughly 2 weeks pre-festival and up to a week post-festival, but comes with the thrill of creating the festival village. One added benefit for the volunteers who make this great contribution is being fed delicious food in our Volunteers’ Kitchen, as well as a full festival ticket with crew camping.
All of our volunteers also receive a clay medallion, handcrafted onsite by our Winter Warmer volunteers, a symbol of gratitude as well as a special memento.
Leadership opportunities are also available. Send your CV to email@example.com if you are interested in taking on a role with more responsibility.
Applications for New Volunteers open midday (AEST) Sunday 1st October, 2017 here.
Organisers will do their best to notify successful applicants within two weeks.
