ELDERS OF WOODFORDIA CELEBRATE SUNSHINE COAST’S 50th ANNIVERSARY
Four of the Woodford Folk Festival’s 12 oversized ambassadors will be in Kawana this weekend to celebrate the Sunshine Coast’s 50th Anniversary.
Known as the Elders of Woodfordia, named after the festival site west of the Sunshine Coast, some of the group are over 4 metres tall and all look to be over 100 years old.
The iconic giants will spend an hour or two mixing and mingling with locals at the ‘Our Sunshine Coast Concert’ to be held at Sunshine Coast Stadium at Bokarina on Sunday, which promises to be ‘an outstanding event and musical experience’ celebrating some of the elements contributing to the artistic culture of the Sunshine Coast.
The Elders made their first appearance 3 years ago at the 2014/15 Woodford Folk Festival.
Like a beloved grandparent, the Elders can be playful, benevolent characters easy with a bit of cheek yet at the same time command considerable respect, for they have the knowledge of old customs and traditions that can only come with age and wisdom.
The Elders know the way of the world and take their role as noble chiefs of the community seriously, often engaging in ceremony and ritual that might at first seem baffling.
Some of their enigma can be decoded by Daniele Poidomani, Artistic Director of Memetica, who is one of Australia’s leading giant puppet makers and an integral collaborator of the Woodford Folk Festival.
Daniele is not only responsible for maintaining the health and wellbeing of the Elders; he is also the keeper of their secrets.
“Just think of them as people,” he says.
“They don’t belong to any particular race or people; their mission is to represent a connection with the land and simply be part of the bigger community and to celebrate with the local community.”
The ‘Our Sunshine Coast Concert’ is a community concert in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Naming of the Sunshine Coast.
The Woodford Folk Festival is held every year between December 27 and January 1 and generates tens of millions of dollars in financial impact for the region.
More than 25,000 Sunshine Coast and Hinterland residents (on aggregate) attend the six-day festival each year.
