After many years of researching options for introducing reusable cups and doing away with wasteful, single-use plastic cups we have finally found a solution. We are delighted to launch reusable bar cups that fit the size and spirit of Woodfordia that will be rolled out across all of our bars this year.
Washed on site with recycled waters, in water-efficient machines, using eco friendly detergents – our new cups are light on environmental impact. This initiative will reduce the recyclable material that gets transported off site by an average 270,000 cups annually. That’s a quarter of a million less cups in the world every year!
When festival-goers purchase a drink, they will be given a reusable cup and when they need a refill, they will be able to bring their cup to purchase their next drink at a discounted price.
It’s also a great way to take Woodford Folk Festival home with you, re-use your cup on a daily basis continuing to reduce waste while you are at home, work or out and about.
Help Us to Make Less Waste
Over the 2015/16 festival we sent less material to landfill than any year in the last decade. The total waste per person sent off site was also the lowest on our ten year record. Thank you for continuing to help reduce our environmental footprint year after year.
The number of general waste bins on site was reduced last festival, encouraging patrons to choose the right bin every time, and our ever expanding composting system meant that more material than ever stayed on site, ready to be returned to the earth of Woodfordia.
Volunteer stewards will again be out on the streets of Woodfordia to answer your questions about what can be composted and recycled. With your help we continue to work toward less and less landfill and waste each festival.
Recycling & Resource Recovery
Our festival patrons play a crucial role in keeping good material out of landfill by choosing the right bin within the festival village and camp grounds. Please take the time to chose the right bin, every time, and plan ahead to have a sturdy recycling system in your camp site.
Food vendors are required to use 100% compostable crockery, so everything you buy from our food stalls goes in the green-lidded composting bins. Put recycling in the yellow-lidded bins throughout the festival village and camps, making sure you continue to recycle right up until you leave the site. Leave any materials bound for landfill at home and keep Woodfordia litter free.
Which Bin To Use
Food scraps and all cups, bowls, plates, straws, cutlery and napkins from our food vendors – including clear containers markers as PLA- go into the green-lidded compost bin. Please no foil or plastic wrap; these go into a red-lidded landfill bin
Plastic bottles, all firm plastics, aluminium cans, tetra-pak juice cartons, dry paper and dry cardboard goes into yellow-lidded recycling bins. Please remember to place soiled paper / cardboard in a compost bin. Please don’t bin your bar cup.
Please think twice before using a landfill bin: double-check your waste isn’t recyclable or compostable first. Thin plastics such as wrappers, plastic bags and films must go in the landfill bins. Waxed paper (made with plastic) and composite packaging such as foil / plastic wraps, nappies, styrofoam and cigarette butts all go to landfill too. Landfill bins may be industrial skip bins or red-lidded wheelie bins.
