It’s on! The first Woodford Folk Festival tickets 2017 / 2018 went on sale yesterday.
You may have heard that we’ve made several big changes to this year’s festival and we encourage you now, more than ever, to pre-purchase tickets and pick up the early bird savings. The announcement of changes regarding the ticket cap, ticket pricing and the introduction of a car parking pass has naturally generated a few questions, the answers to which you should find below.
WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL – TICKET CAP
Last year the festival attendance grew by 5% to a total aggregate audience of 132 thousand and while we felt the comfort level was generally excellent it did put a strain on our infrastructure. While we’re happy for the festival to continue growing in the future, it mustn’t be at the expense of our patron’s comfort or the beautiful festival spirit.
So, we’ve placed a ceiling on the amount of tickets we’ll sell. We won’t sell any more tickets to New Years Eve, for example, than we did last year.
ALL TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ONLINE
Tickets will not be available at the festival gates this year. Instead, all tickets will need to be purchased online, even during the festival.
Because tickets are now limited, we have to keep track of exact numbers as they sell and let people know of their availability. The only way to achieve that is for all tickets to be purchased online rather than at the festival gates.
There’s no getting around it – festival ticket prices have increased.
Permanent infrastructure has been and continues to be the biggest hurdle we’ve faced since we bought the land in 1994. To give you an idea, the resident population of the Woodford Folk Festival is larger than medium size provincial towns such as Nambour. We produce 8 million litres of potable water and process over 1 million litres of sewerage daily. We’ve built 55 amenity blocks and constructed 38 kilometres of all weather roads. We’ve invested more than $15 million so far but the job’s not done. We’ll have to invest millions to keep up to standards and deliver the comfort we know people need at a week long festival.
A pre-sale Season Camping ticket still offers outstanding value for money, particularly during the expensive Christmas and New Year holiday period. Many season campers think of Woodford as a full weeks holiday and compare the costs of any other holiday. For example, at some caravan parks the cost of camping space for the week alone is greater than the whole festival experience offered at the Woodford Folk Festival.
Our want to deliver the lowest prices have led us to taking risks that place us in a very precarious financial position. We know if wet weather comes, less day visitors will attend and a severe wet weather event (like that of 2010/11) has the potential to cause us severe financial distress. It can be difficult to mitigate threats to the festival beyond our control but in order for the festival to continue for years to come, we need to be realistic about literally saving for a rainy day.
Having said that, we’ve benchmarked our ticket prices against other major non-Government festivals around Australia on a per day basis. Comparisons reveal the price of tickets to the Woodford Folk Festival to be well below similar events.
One way to make the festival more affordable is to take advantage of the payment plans available to all ticket types this year, including Day Tickets. Another is to apply for the volunteers program, which caters for people who not only want to get involved behind the scenes but also those who might not be able to afford the ticket price. New volunteer applications go online at the start of October.
For the first time this year, the Payment Plans are now also available for Day Ticket patrons as well as Season Ticket patrons.
Payment Plan options are available until 30 July and tickets are required to be fully paid by the end of October.
This year will see the launch of our ‘One Less Car’ campaign. To support this, all vehicles entering Woodfordia will need to purchase a vehicle pass. We are attempting to both reduce the number of vehicles on site and to increase comfort levels for patrons who are camping, along with ultimately making a significant reduction to our carbon footprint.
We’re hoping our patrons might consider sharing their transport to the festival.
Again, like all ticket sales, all vehicle passes will need to be purchased online.
Season Camp Parking Vehicle Pass $70
Required for each and all vehicles parked anywhere in the Season Camp Grounds, with the exception of trailers or caravans.
To create more shaded camping space and to reduce the amount of dust created by traffic, we hope Season Campers will reconsider having multiple vehicles parked with them and instead opt for a Season Camp Parking Area Pass.
Season Camp Parking Area Pass $20
Required for all vehicles parked in the designated Season Camp Parking Area adjacent to the Season Camp Grounds.
This one-off pass is valid for the duration of the festival if you decide to camp without your vehicle (a temporary unloading pass will be available for your vehicle while you set up camp) or for any extra vehicles. This pass is also required for Season Tent City ticket holders.
Season Parking Pass $20
Required for Season (non-camping) ticket holders driving to the festival and parking daily in the designated Season Day Parking area. This is a once-only fee.
General Parking Pass $20
Required for all vehicles of all Day visitors in the Day Parking area. This pass can be used for multiple days – returning day visitors will not need to repurchase.
Required for all vehicles parking in Overnight Camping area. Required for vehicles belonging to Overnight Tent City ticket holders for parking in the Day Parking area.
We will again be using cashless RFID technology for purchases at festival bars and with other merchants. Unlike last year, putting funds onto the RFID wristband this year will be free – we will not be passing the cost on to you. Refunds for any unused funds will again be available as you leave the site. The reusable cups at festival bars will also be free of charge.
Your support over the years has been incredible. 2016/17 was our biggest and some might say, our best yet. The festival was the cleanest, most respectful, most energetic and beautiful we’ve seen. We believe the measures we put into place this year will ensure that festival spirit lives on in the years ahead.
