Woodfordia Inc. presents the 2017 Winter Warmer
We all have those jobs around the house and yard that call for a whole weekends worth of work with the help of some friends and more often than not involve a trip to that giant green hardware behemoth.
Woodfordia is no different, with the exception that our sausage sizzle is done under a starry sky to the crackle of a campfire in the company of like-minded people. Sounds alright, doesn’t it?
Our 5th annual Winter Warmer will get underway onsite at Woodfordia on the second weekend in August and you’re more than welcome to come along.
Ideally, you’ll be handy, hardworking and have a sense of humour.
As well as functioning as one of the main working bees in the lead up to the annual Woodford Folk Festival, this year the Winter Warmer will also play host to an important milestone in the Festival calendar: the Poster Launch.
(Tip: You can sneak a peek at a tiny bit of the poster artwork on our Facebook page too.)
There’s a strong social element to the weekend, with volunteers encouraged to bring along musical instruments as well as singing voices.
It really is the ultimate working party in the sense that it is work, but it is also a party.
Some of the work requires the help of many hands and forms lasting infrastructure.
It can also provide you with a great opportunity to learn some new skills.
During the 2016 Winter Warmer, for example, a group of 14 volunteers spent the weekend constructing a permanent seating area of what’s known as Gabion benches to the back of the Woodfordian Singing Space. Not only are these rock basket seats sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, their installation has created an extra 60 or 70 seats in that area.
This year you can sign up to be as:
Artist Du Loo-uvre: This is an outdoor mural painting project with our Artist In Residence Gavin Ryan. The completed mural will then be installed into the loos at The Duck, where our visitors will be surrounded by a continuous work of art while they wait to pee. Not only does it mean we’ll have our very own Loo-uvre here at Woodfordia, just about everyone will get to see your handiwork.
Amenities Attacker: How satisfying is it to have a clean bathroom? Join this team to make our amenities look shiny and new again.
Barcoo Blitzer: Tidy and Organise the Outer Barcoo. Remove rubbish and sort pickets and other resources.
Fantastic Fence Builder: Help make a fence that’ll be in the heart of the precinct to help keep the trolls out… or in!
Season Silviculturist: Sounds fancy, doesn’t it? I had to look that word up. Create more space in the campgrounds and around the amenities blocks by giving the trees a trim.
Small Halls Crafternoon: Make beautiful things to make Festival of Small Halls even more beautiful. Hurry! This group is filling up fast.
Timber TLC-er: Get your shine on using a vegetable oil from the deep fryers in the volunteer’s kitchen, specially mixed to give wood a protective coat and make it look new again.
Treasury Toucher-upper: Not as clandestine as it sounds, unfortunately. Our new Treasury building needs a coat of paint to make it fit in more with the natural landscape. So there is still a tiny bit of subterfuge at play.
Fireweedfordia Warrior: Are you ready to go ninja style over the Eastern Bloc pulling out and bagging up fireweed that has cropped up?
Groundsel Getter: Ok, so getter it technically not even a word, but why not join in our efforts to get rid of the noxious weed along our southern boundary anyway.
Workshop Wizard: Summon your powers of transfiguration to help clean up and organise the workshop so our site team can find the wands and other things it needs to do the jobs it needs to do.
Zip Zap Zoomer: Ensuring our electrical infrastructure is safe to use.
If you have the weekend of August 12 and 13 spare, we’d love to have you along. We’ll even give you a delicious free lunch on Sunday as a thank-you!
Camping is available, and while dinner on the Saturday night and breakfast on Sunday will be available for purchase, self-catering for other times is essential.
If you’re a returning volunteer, contact the Volunteers Manager for your volunteer codes so you can apply easily and we can give you priority.
