Woodford Folk Festival is just around the corner, and local producers are gearing up to supply the festival with high quality, tasty fare.
Central to Woodfordia is an ethos of community and sustainability. Food is vital to the human sense of community and belonging, and here at Woodford we believe that this is as much a part of the festival experience as the music. For that reason, organisers nurture relationships with the best producers, stallholders and liquor providers to ensure the best possible experience for patrons.
Partnerships with local, small-scale growers and providers helps keep local economies healthy, and the short distance between farm and festival ensures patrons are consuming the freshest fruits and veges at a lower impact.
Some food stalls to look out for this year include Claude’s Food from Eumundi and Pedal Power Juice of Byron Bay. Claudia Perry of Claude’s Food draws her inspiration from all over the world, serving up everything from fresh, tasty salads to Vietnamese Banh Mi. Pedal Power Juice was founded in 1986 with just a bicycle, a generator and a passion for low impact living. All produce is sources as locally as possible, packaging is compostable and recyclable, and all scraps are composted.
Giancarlo Molinaro, proprietor of Spaghetti Junction and Maleny local, serves up fresh, handmade pasta to Woodford patrons. Giancarlo and the team at SJ take special care to ensure they are producing food made from top-quality ingredients such as bio-dynamic beef from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Palmwoods mushrooms, and home-grown, organic herbs. Spaghetti Junction also serves a locally roasted, fair-trade blend of coffee and delicious locally made gelato. A Woodford mainstay, Giancarlo has had a relationship with the festival for the past 28 years – “Our favourite thing about Woodford is the vibrancy of the people, our staff who keeps us laughing, the organisers and volunteers who make it all possible and of course the artists who help to create wonderful patrons”.
This year’s festival is also showcasing a luscious array of cocktails designed to delight even the fussiest palate. Bourbon lovers will relish Jack’s Ice Tea – a combo of Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7, agave nectar, citrus and peach ice tea. Other tantalizing cocktails include the Watermelon Margarita, the classic Le Grande Fizz and Woodford Sunrise, available at the 15 specialty bars scattered throughout the festival.
Another exciting addition to this year’s festival is the introduction of reuseable cups in the place of disposable plastic cups. Approximately 270,000 plastic cups are used throughout the festival. This initiative will reduce landfill and on-site litter and will make a fabulous memento of Woodford 2016/17.
