Woodford Folk Festival is a meeting of the minds and each year we make way for some incoming inspiration and ready ourselves for the broad Talks Programme. It has always been an important part of the festival and this year is no different.
Dr Karl, one of Australia’s 100 National Living Treasures will live broadcast his radio show each day. Bob Hawke will talk through an array of national issues facing modern Australia. The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) will educate us on the use of law to protect the environment. Three bamboo experts will demonstrate the processes Woodford will undertake using this material. Comedian Dave Callan will have us all in stitches and Amanda Palmer will drink wine as she talks about babies and art.
For the environmentally minded, The Greenhouse venue is a hive of activity. Network, share and expand your knowledge with hands on workshops, information sessions and debates on grassroots and environmental issues with academics, farers and innovators.
Blue Lotus is the home of all things health and well-being. Deepen your knowledge in such matters as spirit dance, yoga, Chinese medicine, nutrition and meditation with a plethora of practical workshops offered.
The Talk Programme truly has something for everyone and each day offers a different perspective. If you are looking to get a deeper cultural encounter, stimulate your brain with new thoughts or simply listen to the powerful words each talk presents, then make sure you check out page 40-47 of the programme today.
Here are some of our must-see Talks at this year’s festival:
Rites & Rights of Passage
A series exploring transitions in our lifetime as humans. Gender, birth, womanhood, illness and death will be examined over multiple sessions throughout the festival.
Ancient Cultures, New Conversations: The Groundbreakers.
If you’re interested in groundbreaking cultural conversation, be sure you mark one of Rhoda Roberts’ talks on your programme. A member of the Bundjalung nation, Widjabul and Gidabul clans of Northern NSW and South East QLD, Rhoda is asking all the big questions with special guests outlined in page 35 of your programme.
Woodfordia’s Bamboo Revolution
Just prior to the festival, Woodford will begin its transition towards growing and treating the bamboo used on site for various art and building festival projects. Across the weekend, three bamboo experts from Indonesia will demonstrated the various processes as part of the selection, feeding and use of the wondrous material with a closed-loop system utlising Woodfordia’s own waste water and a new bio-char system.
Dark Matters & Smashing Ideas with Dr Karl
From the wacky to the implausible, experience a daily dose of Dr Karl as he tackles some curly scenarios with bright minds from the University of the Sunshine Coast.
Environmental Defenders Office (EDO)
The EDO presents a daily series on our public’s right to defend our natural environment. They’ll also be on-site throughout the festival offering consultation and advice for individuals with questions about campaigns or advice for their own local situations.
The ‘Fix Australia Live Think Tank’ featuring Charles Firth, Dr Karl, Karen Middleton and Professor Ian Lowe. It’s going to be an all-star hoot!
